Challenging Ronald

This is Doctor David McDonald’s account of challenging a proposal for a McDonalds in Port Macquarie, published in the Journal of Paediatrics and Child Health. If you are concerned about the potential impact of a fast food outlet on your child’s health, you really should read this. It features corporate sneakiness (McDonalds called itself a ‘refreshment room’ to get around planning controls); high drama (kids too large for child-sized anasthetic devices, and in one case too large of the emergency helicopter); expert medical comment on fast food and childhood obesity; gritty determination (Port Macquarie refused the application); and ultimately victory (McDonalds took the decision to the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales and Council’s decision was upheld).
